The heat was on Oct. 10 at the first Alpine Kiwanis Soap Box Derby race in Alpine!
Almost 30 determined young drivers sped down to the finish line in the 1600 block of Alpine Boulevard. Despite hot weather, spectators enthusiastically cheered everyone in the local All-American Soap Box Derby.
“I’ve been racing for about two years,” said Kylie Womack of El Cajon, one of 28 competitors in the Alpine Kiwanis Club & Foundation event.  “I love it. It’s really fun to be able to learn about the cars.”
Alpine Kiwanis President Jerry Hines said everyone had fun, although the intent look on the drivers’ faces showed “the kids were serious about it.”
The money raised will support local youth activities, said Alpine Kiwanis President-Elect Pene Manale of Manale Media & Graphic Design.
“We had a great (derby) committee,” said event Co-Chair Greg Fox, Alpine Kiwanis Immediate Past President, thanking everyone.
Riley G. of Las Vegas, NV, was first in the double elimination and single elimination stock divisions. (Drivers’ last names aren’t released for publication.) Alpine resident Max G. was second in double and third in single. Faith F. of Alpine was fourth in double elimination.
McKayla G., Las Vegas, was first in super stock. Nash H. of Alpine was second. Nash was first in single elimination super stock.
The club has scheduled its next big race for March 19, 2016.  Open to drivers 7 to 19 years old, there are many sponsorship opportunities. Derby winners have a chance to compete in the July 2016 national race in Akron, Ohio.
The Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians was event title sponsor. Barons Market and New Cars Inc. were major sponsors.
Viejas and Barons are members of the Alpine Mountain Empire Chamber of Commerce.
Chamber members California Bank & Trust, Comfort Keepers, On Line Bookkeeping & Tax Service, Alpine Business Networking Association, Postal Annex of Alpine, Alpine Garden & Gifts, Primary Residential Mortgage, Inc., My Boys & Me Window Washing and Kamps Propane also supported the event.  So did Century 21, LPL Financial and California Options Real Estate.
