Buddy Walk a celebration

The Buddy Walk “is also a celebration of people with down syndrome and their families and loved ones,” says Down Syndrome Association president Shelley Herron.

Join the Down Syndrome Association at the San Diego Buddy Walk on Sunday, Oct. 22, from 1-4 p.m. at the Nobel Athletic Fields and Recreation Center. This year’s theme is Join Us Under the Big Tent, a circus-themed celebration along with the fundraising walk, including music, dancing, craft, a resource fair, and activities.

DSA San Diego President Shelley Herron said the walk is about a half mile, on a flat surface at the athletic field.

“We have wheelchairs, walkers, it is a pretty easy walk,” she said. “It is a fundraiser, but it is also a celebration of people with down syndrome and their families and loved ones. We have food, activities, music, and dancing. It is like a wonderful afternoon party.”

Herron said DSA is still accepting sponsors and vendors, usually up to the last minute.

“This is our biggest fundraiser of the year. There is energy there. There is just something about being around someone with down syndrome. That love is just there,” she said. “And for those who cannot make the event, we do take donations online. There are many people out there who have had someone with down syndrome in their life. They have been touched by them and want to contribute in some way.”

Herron said DSA San Diego serves around 2,000 families throughout San Diego County. It was established in 1978 by families who identified the need of an organized network to provide emotional support, information, and resources for individuals with down syndrome, their families, and friends. DSA has established numerous community partners who support and augment services for families and enrich the lives of people with Down syndrome. DSA is actively engaged in key local, state and national initiatives, influencing policy and practices that impact health care, education and social service programs.
