School’s Honor Patrol pays tribute to veterans, first responders

The Shadow Hills Elementary School Honor Patrol participated in a Veterans Day ceremony on campus.

The 4th and 5th grades at Shadow Hills Elementary hosted their second annual Flag      Ceremony Tuesday with a Breakfast with Hero’s followed by the tradition of a Great Highland Bagpipe procession of the school’s Honor Patrol, the unfolding of the flag, and the raising of the colors. In attendance were veterans, Alpine Fire Department, Alpine Sheriff’s Station and first responders.

The ceremony was spearheaded by this year’s PTA President, Chantelie SanNicolas, a Navy Seabee Veteran herself deployed in the Iraqi Freedom War campaign.

“I started the event to teach students the importance of honoring our flag by learning to handle and celebrate it correctly.”

Paula Jansen, another Veteran of Foreign Wars and retired Navy Chief with 21 years’     service was guest speaker. She is the first female Commander at the Carter-Smith VFW Post 5867 and Jr. Vice Commander for District 1. Commander Jansen read the poem by Ruth Apperson Rous titled “I Am the Flag” written in 1777.
