The murder/vehicular manslaughter trial of a Campo man accused of causing the deaths of his two passengers in 2017 has been delayed again until Feb. 4, 2019.
The attorney for Ryan Gary Renz, 25, told El Cajon Superior Court Judge Jeff Fraser in Oct. she needed more time to prepare. The prosecutor opposed the delay, but the judge granted her request.
Renz has been charged with second-degree murder, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and DUI in the deaths of Johnny Ray Meyer, Jr., 23, and Dillon Cody Wiltfong, 26, both of whom also lived in Campo.
Renz was driving a vehicle at a high rate of speed on Buckman Springs Road and he failed to negotiate a curve. His car crashed into a tree, rolled over several times, and came to rest on its roof. Both Meyer and Wiltfong died from multiple blunt force trauma.
Deputy District Attorney Laura Evans filed murder charges because Renz was previously convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol in 2015. A jury can convict Renz of murder or vehicular manslaughter or both.
Renz has pleaded not guilty and has waived his right to have a speedy trial. He remains in jail on $3 million bail.
