Viejas makes going back to school safer in Alpine

Preparing for the unknown in June, the Alpine Union School District announced its learning plans for this school year. The district created learning plans that included returning to school, distance learning, a hybrid and homeschool options.

With many schools preparing for in-person classes as soon as possible, a gift from Viejas Casino & Resort makes returning Alpine students safer after a donation of 100,000 face masks to the District on Aug. 20. This donation was brought to attention by the Viejas Tribal Council.

Viejas Tribal Vice Chairman Victor Woods said the safety and well-being of the students are a principal importance to the tribal council in a press release.

“It’s important to the Viejas tribal membership and also to the Viejas Casino & Resort team that we understand and appreciate the importance of safety in the COVID-19 environment that we are in.”

AUSD Superintendent Dr. Rich Newman said this donation is a year’s worth of supplies for its students, staff members and families in need.

“The impact these face masks will have on our school district is huge,” he stated. “It is also a huge cost savings to us and, as always, Viejas has been a fantastic partner with us through the years. This is one more example of how they step up for the community and support virtually every need we have.”

The Alpine Union School District serves approximately 1,750 students in grades K-8.
