East County youth baseball teams turn in star-spangled summer

Rancho De Oro Little League engineered a runner-up finish in this year’s California Section 7 championship tournament.

Though no East County team will take the field at this year’s Iconic Little League World Series in South Williamsport, Pa., it has still been a star-spangled summer for youth baseball.

California District 41 and California District 66 combined to send 10 age-group all-star teams to the next level of play after winning district championship banners. Three teams were still active as of Tuesday night.

Spring Valley Little League’s Senior Division team (15-16-year-olds) leads the parade with a berth in this weekend’s West Region tournament in Oakland. The winner of that 11-team fray advances to the Senior League Baseball World Series July 26 to Aug. 2 in Easley, S.C.

At the lower age divisions, Fletcher Hills’ 10U and 11U teams both qualified for California Section 7 championship games on Tuesday, with if necessary double-elimination games scheduled on Wednesday. Section winners advance to the Southern California state regional tournament, the final stop for those age divisions.

Game on

California District 41 champions for the 2025 spring season included Fletcher Hills (10U and 11U divisions) and Rios Canyon (12U division) while District 66 pennant winners included Spring Valley (10U and 11U divisions) and Encanto (12U division).

Champions in the older divisions included Lemon Grove (Junior League) and Spring Valley (Senior League) from District 66 and Rancho De Oro (Intermediate Division) and Alpine American (Junior League) from District 41.

The 12U division ultimately feeds into the Little League World Series. Encanto and Rios Canyon carried district championship banners into the Section 7 tournament against competition from District 22 (Calexico) and District 42 (Sweetwater Valley).

Rios Canyon defeated Calexico, 11-4, in the four-team tournament’s opening round while Sweetwater Valley edged Encanto by a score of 8-7. Sweetwater Valley and Rios Canyon advanced to the winners bracket semifinal on Saturday with Sweetwater Valley prevailing 10-0 to send Rios Canyon to the losers bracket semifinal against Encanto.

Rios Canyon won 8-1 on Sunday to meet Sweetwater Valley in a championship game rematch that the District 42 champions pulled out 16-6 to secure a berth in the Southern California state tournament being played July 19-27 at Fountain Valley Sports Park.

Rancho De Oro and Rios Canyon dueled for the District 41 championship banner. Rancho De Oro defeated Rios Canyon, 4-2, on July 3 to force a double elimination championship game after Rios Canyon had gone undefeated through the preliminary rounds.

Rios Canyon regrouped to prevail 6-3 in the district double- elimination championship game on July 7. It was a memory- making win — the first time in 45 years the league has won a District 41 pennant.

The Fletcher Hills 11s advanced straight through to Tuesday’s championship game with a 3-0 victory over District 22 champion Imperial in the opening round and an 8-1 win over Eastlake in Sunday’s winners bracket semifinal.

Eastlake, which defeated Spring Valley, 20-0, in the opening round, made amends with a 12-5 elimination game win over Imperial in Monday’s losers bracket semifinal to get a second crack at Fletcher Hills.

Because of the earlier loss to Fletcher Hills, Eastlake was forced into a must-win scenario on Tuesday to dictate a second championship game on Wednesday.

A win by Fletcher Hills on Tuesday would cement the Section 7 title for the District 41 champions.

The section champion moves on to the SoCal state tournament July 19-27 in Oxnard and Port Hueneme.

Like Fletcher Hills in the 11s, Sweetwater Valley’s 12s advanced to Tuesday’s championship game with back-to-back wins over District 66 champion Spring Valley, 14-1, and District 41 champion Fletcher Hills, 14-0.

Fletcher Hills, which defeated District 22 champion Calexico, 16-4, in the opening round, fought back with an 8-4 win over Calexico in Monday’s losers bracket semifinal to advance to Tuesday’s championship contest. Calexico eliminated Spring Valley, 11-4, in Sunday’s losers bracket game.

Sweetwater Valley needed one win in two potential championship encounters against Fletcher Hills to advance while Fletcher Hills was cornered by needing two wins in two potential matchups to advance.

The section champion advances to the SoCal state tournament July 18-26 at Homer Briggs Park in Ontario.

The Section 7 Intermediate 50/70 Division tournament pitted District 42 champion Eastlake against District 41 champion Rancho De Oro. Eastlake won the best-of-three series by scores of 12-4 on June 25 and 7-1 on June 28 to advance to the Southern California regional tournament.

Eastlake won the tournament opener, 10-8, over North Venice on July 2 but faltered with back-to- back losses July 5-6 to Scripps Ranch, 20-1, and Santa Anita, 10-5, to end its season.

District 66 hosted the four team Junior Division section tournament July 1-6 between Lemon Grove (District 66), Park View (District 42), Alpine American (District 41) and Yuma (District 22).

Park View went 3-0 to win the gathering with wins over Alpine American (10-3 in the opening round), Yuma (3-2 in winners bracket semifinal) and Lemon Grove (12-3 in the championship game).

Lemon Grove eliminated Alpine American, 8-1, in a losers bracket encounter on July 2 and edged Yuma, 7-6, in the losers bracket semifinal to advance to the championship game.

Alpine American had defeated Rancho De Oro in the teams’ best-of-three District 41 championship series by scores of 22-2 and 9-6 after dropping the series opener 4-1.

The Senior Division section tournament June 24-27 at Spring Valley Little League showcased three teams: Spring Valley (District 66), Eastlake (District 42) and Mountain Empire (District 41). Spring Valley emerged at the head of the class with 15-0 and 17-3 wins over runner-up Eastlake. Eastlake opened the tournament with a tight 7-6 win over Mountain Empire and earned a rematch against Spring Valley with a 7-2 elimination win over Mountain Empire.

The sweep launched the District 66 and Section 7 champions into the 10-team Southern California state tournament. Spring Valley won its opening four games to advance to the championship game before being forced into a double-elimination replay by Port Hueneme.

Spring Valley defeated Canyon Springs, 4-1, in its opener on July 2, then blasted Chino American, 10-0, in a winners bracket game on July 5. Two more wins followed: 8-5 over North Venice on July 6 and 6-2 over La Mirada on July 8.

Port Hueneme halted the streak with a 3-1 win on July 11 to force the teams into a winner-take- all matchup on July 12. Spring Valley led from the first inning onward in piling up a convincing 10-0 win that catapulted the “Sixty-Sixers” to the West Region tournament in the Bay Area.

Spring Valley finished 5-1 in the SoCal state tourney while Port Hueneme was 6-2, playing every single day.

“It’s always a goal to go further than we did the year before,” Spring Valley manager Esteban Virto said. “We’ve been building this — brick by brick — since they were 10 years old.”
