An Alpine man has been sentenced to a suspended term of 180 days jail on condition of three years probation for attempting to reach for a sheriff’s deputy taser in an incident near the Alpine School District.
Robert C. Carpenter, 60, was given credit for four days previously spent in jail and will not have to serve any more time under probation conditions by El Cajon Superior Court Judge Patricia Cookson.
Cookson fined him $1,514 on Oct. 9. A jury convicted him on Sept. 12 of resisting an executive officer, attempting to obstruct an officer by reaching for a taser, and misdemeanor resisting arrest.
Carpenter’s attorney could not be reached for comment. Carpenter did not testify.
The incident occurred Jan. 10 after deputies responded to a burglar alarm going off at 4 p.m. at the Alpine School District building at 1323 Administration Way. It was a false alarm, as the building was found secure.
Deputies saw Carpenter in the area and began asking him questions. They said he aggressively resisted arrest in a scuffle. He pleaded not guilty and was convicted at trial.
