The Annual Labor Day celebration at Our Lady of Light Catholic Church took place Sunday. The 77th occurrence of the “Deep Pit BBQ” continues a tradition started as a wedding celebration by a local family sometime in the 1930’s. Then as it was such a hug success, the parish priest at the time, decided to make it an annual event, and it has been a favorite festivity among many of the Mountain Empire region, just east of San Diego, in a little place called Descanso.

The Annual Labor Day celebration at Our Lady of Light Catholic Church took place Sunday. The 77th occurrence of the “Deep Pit BBQ” continues a tradition started as a wedding celebration by a local family sometime in the 1930’s. Then as it was such a hug success, the parish priest at the time, decided to make it an annual event, and it has been a favorite festivity among many of the Mountain Empire region, just east of San Diego, in a little place called Descanso.
Our Lady of Light, currently led by Father Steven Larion, hosted the event on church grounds, where local vendors and craftsmen set up booths, and activities for adult and child alike. In addition to goods and fare of locals, the main culinary highlight was the deep-pit barbecue beef, cooked for 13 hours in a closed charcoal pit, and pie for dessert.
Musical entertainment for dancing and dining was provided by popular country and western band Honky Tonk Kings. There were raffles, prizes, and for the kids, several game booths and activities, including a “cowboy simulator” where one can learn to ride and rope. This family friendly event happens every year, and admission is free.
