Backcountry bulletin: Holidays ushered into backcountry

Monday, Nov. 10, is a district holiday in the Mountain Empire Union School District and

Nov. 11 is Veterans Day, while classrooms will also be dark Nov. 24-28 for Thanksgiving break.

Parent-teacher conference days are set for Nov. 17-21.

The Pumpkin Express may have stopped running but soon the trains will be chugging along

for the annual North Pole Limited train rides at the Campo train depot.

The family-friendly holiday themed train excursion begins Nov. 28 and extends through Dec.

28 on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The train’s elf crew will entertain guests with singalongs,

holiday stories and hot chocolate. Santa and Mrs. Claus will also make an appearance

and meet with guests.

The train ride makes its way through the back country and “winds down the hill through

some of the most scenic parts of the historic San Diego and Arizona Railway,” according to the

Pacific Southwest Railway Museum Association.

Trains depart at Fridays and Saturdays, Nov. 28 – Dec. 20 at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sundays,

Nov. 30 – Dec. 21, at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. The Campo Depot is at Campo at 750 Depot St., in Campo.
