Who says firefighters can’t cook? They certainly can, and they were at the Alpine Library to prove it. Their skills were put to the test in the Pasta category on June 18, beginning at 5:30. The three stations that were involved in this heated contest include Viejas, Sycuan, and our very own Alpine.
As pasta was the theme for the contest, all who attended were welcome to taste the entrees and cast their votes for the winning cuisine du jour.

While votes were being tallied, Chief Butz from Viejas Fire gave an informative presentation/slideshow including a short history of the Viejas Band and some information about how their station works with other stations to provide coverage. He also encouraged everyone to make sure they have defensible space around their homes, and to have a “go bag” ready in case of emergency evacuation. Fire season is coming and we need to be prepared, especially in this area.
The voting public had many wonderful comments to share about the dishes written out on the score cards provided by the library such as, “Very tasty”, “You can cook for me anytime!”. “I loved the spicy taste”, “Yummo!! And “Great, loved it”
Infact all the entrees were delicious, and it was a very close call for the winners. But when the votes were counted, 1st place was awarded to Viejas for their mac n cheese, 2nd place was awarded to Sycuan for their spaghetti with a little kick, and 3rd place was awarded to Alpine for their rigatoni.
It was really a fun evening. Each station was given $50 by ALFA to help defray expenses for the food. Chief Butz surprised us by announcing he was giving back the $50 allotment to be used towards the new library! The other two stations followed suit, resulting in a $150 donation for our new Alpine Branch.
