It’s Summertime, and that means that the 2015 Summer Reading Challenge is on!
Beginning on June 1, the San Diego County Library began their Summer Reading Challenge for book lovers of all ages.  If you frequent the Alpine Library, the Descanso Library, Pine Valley, Julian, or Campo libraries, you can find the information needed to be a part of this annual activity that gives you more than just prizes.
Reading books allows us all to escape and join an adventure in the comfort of our own spaces, whether that space is our home, under a tree in a park, or waiting in the car on a friend, or child.  Reading opens the mind, exercises the brain, and lifts your soul to heights that only the written word can achieve.
If you have the Internet at home, you can sign up for this challenge by logging on to www.sdcl.org, click on “Sign up Here” and fill out the form.  Click Save.  You can pick up a paper reading log from your favorite library as well.
If you don’t have the Internet at home, visit your local library, and sign up using a library computer.
You can sign up all your family members, including your children.  This is an excellent way to improve your skills.  When reading books, we expand our grammer skills, our literacy, and our communication skills.  We also improve our speech patterns, and our ability to make connections and comprehend situations.  Our cognitive skills get a work out which helps with mental sharpness, and keeps us mentally stimulated.
Reading fiction, not only allows us to enjoy a good story, it allows us to go on an adventure and visit places we may never be able to visit otherwise.  Reading nonfiction allows us to keep learning about how to do things, about people of importance and their impact on this world of ours, and about this world that we live in.
Make a summer commitment and join the reading challenge if you are able.  The prizes that you will collect are far more comprehensive than the wonderful prizes that the Library offers you for your achievement.
You may surprise yourself and become a book lover before you know it!
