Sophomore is ‘Remarkable’

The San Diego County Public Defender’s Office announced the 2023 25 Most Remarkable Teens in San Diego County on Nov. 9. The 25 teens were selected from among 77 nominated by the community for their inspiring contributions and efforts in categories such as civic involvement, activism, commitment to personal excellence and courage to overcome personal adversity, science and arts and culture.

Joanay Benton, a senior at Mountain Empire High School received the award in the Overcoming Barriers category. From the LaPosta Band of Mission Indians, Joanay is the top student with the highest GPA in her senior class. She has also been enrolled at Cuyamaca Colleges since her sophomore year. Joanay is the MEHS Associated Student Body president, Future Farmers of America president, and vice president for the Mountain Empire senior class. Joanay also excels in sports as a cheerleader, basketball player, and volleyball player.
