This year, the Luau was moved to the late afternoon early evening hours to beat the summer heat. And what a grand idea it was, as people flocked to the Western Luau, hosted by the Chapel of the Hills Methodist Church, in Descanso, CA. The evening atmosphere offered a retreat, while guests enjoyed a pit barbecue prepared by the church’s men’s club, music by Just Friends, and authentic island dancing by the famouns Tan-gun Finau family.

As the evening rolled on, and entertainment enticed everyone in toe tapping dance, the opportunity for fund raising reached a crescendo. Opportunity drawings and chances for one of Shirley Dyers famous quilts were successful and prosperous.

However summer often brings out the wildest part in personalities and this year the the wild came out in the form of hip swinging hula-hula dancing by some of Descanso’s finest. This charity event called for donations of one hundred dollars to see the Luau guest of choice, swing their hips in colorful grass skirts. In the name of charity, and definitely in fun, six Descanso gentlemen donned colorful grass skirts to shake it up for a good cause.
