UNDER WHAT CIRCUMSTANCES IS IT APPROPRIATE TO BAN BOOKS FROM SCHOOL CLASSROOMS AND LIBRARIES?

Darlene Cossio

A s a mom, I believe parents should have a say in controversial content in the classroom. I believe transparency is key in this situation. Our teachers and school board members should have open discussions with parents and students when questionable books are considered for the classroom.

Book selection should be aligned with the curriculum of the school and the school district. I have actually gone to our schools to look at books that are available to students. In this process, I did not see any books that are not aligned with the policies and curriculum of our schools. It is the responsibility of the school district to ensure that the books available to our students are aligned with the curriculum and teaching policies in the Alpine School District.

We are very conscious of representing our community and ensuring that our students also have the opportunity to grow and learn in a safe space. Consequently, parents are always invited to review every curriculum that we adopt along with the resources in the program We have not banned books but our district staff also work hard to ensure that our parents are the first teachers and subject matter that may be controversial is left to parents at home.

Eric Wray

There are no books that will b e banned from Alpine Union School District. We will make sure that all books are age appropriate where the child is being educated according to their grade level. But we would never ban books in the classroom.
