35th Sycuan Powwow

Sycuan Band of the Kumey­aay Nation is returning this year with its 35th Sycuan Pow­wow and third Fashion Show themed “The Fire Within,” al­lowing Native American artist to show the beauty, talent, and resilience of the Native Ameri­can culture. Held on Sept. 5, the fashion show’s theme, in­spired by the Kumeyaay greet­ing, “may the fire (your spirit) burn bright within you,” reflect­ing the enduring spirit of indig­enous people. The fashion show featured 11 designers from Tur­tle Island, with their designs available for purchase.

The three-day powwow will showcase champion powwow dancers from across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, celebrating the beautiful dance style of indigenous people repre­senting their tribes. Chairman Cody Martiniz will conduct an invocation before each grand entry. Arts and craft vendors will sell handmade authentic jewelry, pottery, basketry, and paintings. There will also be an abundance of food vendors.

The Powwow is located at 5469 Casino Way in El Cajon Sept. 6-8. On Friday Sept. 6 from 5-9 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 7 from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m., and on Sunday, Sept. 8 from 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., and is free to the public.
