Group looks for flower input

The nonprofit Preserve Alpine’s Heritage is planning to initiate a community referendum leading to the selection of a flower that represents Alpine and its residents. PAH notified other Alpine organizations including the Cleveland National Forest Foundation, Alpine Chamber of Commerce, Alpine Historical Society, Alpine Woman’s Club, Back Country Land Trust, and the California Native Plant Society requesting recommendations.

PAH is looking for nominations by July 20 which can be made by emailing info@preservealpinesheritage. org. A ballot with final candidates will be distributed on Aug. 1, and voting will occur during the month of August. PAH board member Courtney Norton said details will be released for the celebration and announcement of the winner on Oct. 14.

In PAH’s outreach, it selected the following flowers for candidates: California Poppy, Cleveland Sage, White Sage, Lupine Arroyo, Blue Eyed Grass, and California Lilac.

Norton said that the Board was brainstorming on ways to engage and enhance the community and realized that Alpine did not have a flower to represent the community and decided to start this campaign and is currently looking for nominations.

“We are looking for anything that is California native, hopefully native to the region of Alpine,” she said. “Drought tolerant, easily accessible via seeds and plants as well.”

  1. Come on Alpine Sun, you can do better. A photo of non-native Icelandic Poppies for an article about native flowers? There are a million photos of California Poppies available online.
