Congressional District 50 candidate Ammar Campa-Najjar is soliciting questions for an upcoming town hall meeting to be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 18 at the Alpine Community Center, located at 1830 Alpine Blvd.
According to town hall organizer and Campa-Najjar supporter Anne Craig-Tillmond, the upcoming event is being organized to spur engagement and participation in the upcoming congressional election, whether or not attendees ultimately vote for Campa-Najjar.
“The higher the voter participation, the more representative our government will be across the spectrum. The thing with representative government is learning to cooperate and compromise, do the best for the widest swath of the population possible. When you don’t get involved, you give up your power,” Craig-Tillmond said.
Campa-Najjar, 30, is the sole Democratic candidate in a race for the 50th that already includes five candidates who are seeking election on the Republican ticket, as well as one Independent, Alpine resident Helen Horvath.
The seat is currently held by Duncan Hunter, Jr., who was indicted in 2018 charges of wire fraud, falsification of records, prohibited use of campaign funds and bank fraud prior to his election as the incumbent to the 50th district in 2018.
The town hall approach is one that Campa-Najjar employed in his 2018 run for the 50th, where he ultimately lost the vote to Hunter by 3% of the votes.
Craig-Tillmond said that questions for Campa-Najjar can be submitted through his website, www.campacampaign. com and that he will be kept unaware of the questions prior to the Town Hall in an effort to preserve spontaneity at the event.
Craig-Tillmond said she did not plan to organize town hall meetings for other candidates.
