Alpine’s very own Level 2 Team Gymnastics competed at “Gymfest” in Anaheim on January 17th and qualified for participation in the national competition in June.  At this point you are probably wondering “What is Team Gymnastics?”  Or, “Why haven’t I heard about this sport before?”  Well, here’s a little background; this sport combines dance and gymnastics in synchronized floor routines and tumbling passes.  The teams have a minimum of six people and the routines are set to music.  There are currently two teams in Alpine, both of which are based at Gymtrix on Tavern Road – “Genesis” Level 5 and “Fusion” Level 2.  Team composition is based on skill level, rather than age.
The qualification meet was held at the Disneyland Hotel so after the competition the teams got to enjoy the  California Adventure and Disneyland parks.  The team’s coach, Kristi Gorney, explains that it’s really about the team experience, working together and building team spirit.  The team members with their coach have activities outside the gym including visiting a pumpkin patch this past fall and a team retreat planned for this spring.  The team has also showcased their talent at The Alpine Elementary School’s Halloween Festival where they performed a “zombie dance” in full makeup and costume.  They have also participated in the Alpine “Parade of Lights” and “Christmas in the Village” parade in La Mesa.
You can check out both teams in action right here in Alpine at the upcoming Gymtrix Olympics, on April 25th.  You will also see more of the gymnasts around town as efforts at fundraising are ramped up.  A carwash and tumble-a-thon are currently planned for the near future to help raise the monies to send both teams to Hollywood at the end of June for national competition, being held at Universal Studios.  Alpine now has two new teams to take pride in and cheer on!
