Well, almost. Many who grew up in the East County of San Diego have fond memories of our local amusement park, Marshal Scotty’s, located adjacent to the I8 Freeway on Ridge Hill Road. This Halloween, from Oct 28-31st, Marshal Scotty’s will be resurrected as “Marshal Scary Scotty’s Scare Trail.
The “abandoned” amusement park is opening its doors after being converted to a meandering trail of gore and horror. Visitors will be treated and tricked by zombies, ghouls, ghosts, and a posse of insane clowns as they shuffle from one scene of fright to the next while exploring the amusement park grounds.
The idea originated from local Alpine resident and engineer, Dustin Parr. He looked into what it would cost to permit and insure a “haunted house” at the dilapidated amusement park, because he wanted to do something fun for “East County”. After a facebook posting to probe for interest, dozens of volunteers stepped forward to help Parr make his vision a reality.
“We started this really late, about mid August. Because we are donating the proceeds to Saving Horses, INC, a non-profit charity that rescues and finds homes for horses, the County helped us push our permit through. That was nice of them. Then everything else was done by the volunteers that wanted to help. We had to clear a lot of brush and make some repairs for safety, but it’s coming together” said Parr. “On Saturday, from from four to six PM, we’re doing free safe trick or treating for kids, and those who wish the stay and go on the trail are welcome. Kids twelve and younger are free, and it’s only ten dollars for adults”.
The haunted park has created some buzz in Alpine, and triggered many a fond memory among those who grew up with East County’s own version of the happiest place on Earth.
