County libraries feed minds and mouths

Everyone knows libraries offer books. But 16 County Library branches are meeting a different kind of community need this time of year – summer meals and food pantries. The food programs serve those in isolated communities and places where the need is highest.

In addition to the summer meals and summer food pantries, some branches offer year round pantries, meals for seniors and after-school snacks. In all, that’s 25 food programs at 16 branch locations.

Feeding San Diego provides the food at County libraries, helping to reach children who typically rely on school meals but may not get enough to eat during the summer months. The organization reports that one in seven children in the county face food insecurity.

Over the past year, more than 556,600 pounds of food have been distributed at library locations, reaching 27,833 households.

Feeding San Diego uses federal grants to pay for the summer meals. A state library grant provides programs, books and supplies during the food programs to encourage the use of the library, reading and learning.

“By offering meals and food resources alongside our summer programs, we’re able to support families not only through learning opportunities but also by helping meet essential needs —especially in high-need or isolated areas where access to food can be limited during the summer months.” said County Library Director Migell Acosta.

The Library says the response has been overwhelmingly positive. “Our sites and meal services have expanded over the last three years, serving more children and families than ever.” said Library Youth Services Manager Jodi dela Pena.

These food programs are another example of how libraries are evolving into central places where the community gathers. County Library offers something for most everyone in the way of cultural events, classes ranging from crafts to Zumba, magic shows, chess and music clubs, writers’ groups and of course, story time. The Library also offers a free online Library High School, Cool Zones during the hot summer months and much more.
