San Diego County Library (SDCL) opened a new, state-of-the-art facility for the community of Alpine. The Alpine Library combines sustainable design, technological innovation and offers the community a host of services that empower and educate the community, including story time every day, programs for all ages, and free access to a network of 42 million books, DVD movies and music CDs.
One of the many highlights of the new Alpine Library is the children’s area, featuring new books for kids, spaces for story times, crafts, and early literacy activities.
The children’s area has a Discovery Zone funded in part by First 5 San Diego that serves as a fun, interactive, educational space that promotes early learning. In 2013, the San Diego County Library partnered with First 5 San Diego to implement Discovery Zones designed to promote family literacy and other positive parenting experiences critical to the development of early reading skills. Beginning initially with five Discovery Zones, the San Diego County Library has since expanded three more dedicated spaces, now totaling eight.
Early learning Discovery Zones such as this, “children will gain the skills needed to build a solid reading foundation that will help them succeed when they first start school and help them reach their highest potential as they continue their education,” says Executive Director Kim Gallo.
“One of the primary focuses of the San Diego County Library is to promote information, education, and inspiration in our young people, and we are proud to be able to accommodate the community in this way,” said Deputy Director Susan Moore.
The Alpine Library is located at 1752 Alpine Blvd. For more information, call the library at (619) 445-4221.
