It’s going to be a red, white and blue Alpine Wall of Honor Veterans Day Celebration and Dedication Ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 10!
This year the 100th anniversary of the Nov. 11, 1918, Armistice Day that ended World War I in Europe will be celebrated this Sunday. Out of 4.7 million Americans who served in the “War to End All Wars,” about 116,000 died and 204,000 were wounded.
The local salute to military veterans the day before Veterans Day starts at 9:30 a.m. at the Alpine Community Center at 1830 Alpine Blvd.
In addition to the traditional VFW Bert Fuller Post 9578 color guard and the Patriot Guard with their flags and motorcycles, eight singers will perform traditional patriotic songs, according to veteran Dan Foster who helped start the Wall.
“We’re adding 20 new veterans’ names to the Wall,” said Foster, past president of the Kiwanis Club of Alpine. “There are now more than 700 names on the Wall. Our goal is always to say two words to the men and women who have served our country. Those two words are ‘Thank you.’”
Former Tribal Chairman Anthony Pico of the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians and Foster will be guest speakers at the event, which is open to the public.
Another large group expected this year is E Clampus Vitus, known for its fun-filled celebration of the history of the American West.

The breakfast with networking starts at 7:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at the Casino Inn Bar & Grill, 1155 Alpine Blvd.
Danielle Steinhorst, investment relations and communications manager of the San Diego East County Economic Development Council, talk about the effect of new tax laws for people who have been holding onto property rather than selling it.
Permits and attracting tourists and business to the area are also topics.

Reserve free Thanksgiving dinners now for senior residents in Alpine who are home-bound, on a limited income or don’t have family in the area!
The Alpine Community Center at 1830 Alpine Blvd. will deliver the delicious traditional meals between 9:30 and 11 a.m. to homes on Thursday, Nov. 22.
“This is the 21st year of the Thanksgiving dinner program,” said Cindi Robertson, operations manager of the center at 1830 Alpine Blvd. “We do this to be of service to our community.”
This year everyone can participate by donating money to the Turkey Bucks program at the Albertson’s store at 2955 Alpine Blvd. The store is providing the meals.
“Donations from the community and local Alpine families also provide funding,” Robertson said.
