At a June 20 luncheon, the Alpine Woman’s Club awarded four $2,000 scholarships to local high school students.

“We have given out over $150,000 in scholarships to high school seniors who reside in Alpine and are continuing to higher education,” said AWC Scholarship Chair Linda Whitlock.

Recipients of the scholarships include Brooke LaFalce, a graduate of Granite Hills High School who will be attending Grossmont Community College majoring in Elementary Education.

“I am truly appreciative that I was awarded a scholarship from the Woman’s Club. This will help me financially through my freshman year of college. I want to thank the community of Alpine for giving me this opportunity and for their support,” said Brooke.

Elise Yankopoulos graduated from River Valley Charter School and will be attending the University of California Davis, majoring in Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior.

Elise said she is grateful for this scholarship for the doors it helps open and the pride for the “kind words and recognition” that comes with it.

“It helps give me the peace of mind to focus more on my academics and my extracurricular activities without as much stress and ability to purchase necessary items for college much more easily than I would have been able to otherwise,” she said. “Additionally, it helps me not burden my family with the expenses of college as much which I am very, very grateful for because I want to be as self-sufficient as possible. Lastly, it gives me a lot of personal satisfaction to see my efforts recognized in such a warm and positive manner by such kind and generous people and proud that I have such nice and considerate people in my community who freely give these gifts. It means the world to me, and others and I am very grateful.”

Rylan Larson graduated from Grossmont High School and plans to major in Communication and American Literature at the University of California Los Angeles.

Camden Sos is a graduate of Granite Hills High School and will attend Texas Christian University majoring in Engineering.
