Drivers needed to help prevent hunger

Senior Gleaners of San Diego needs drivers.

The volunteer organization that is focused on addressing hunger in the community is looking for drivers aged 55-years and older with a good driving record.

Volunteer drivers will haul hand-picked fruits and vegetables and surplus groceries throughout the county.

San Diego Gleaners operates two vans primarily on weekday mornings.

Most assignments are three to four hours long, one day per week.

Drivers on the grocery route pickup unsold groceries at stores and make deliveries to food pantries.

Fruit harvest routes find drivers picking up loaded boxes from residential harvests and deliver to similar locations.

Other volunteers accompany drivers to help load and unload.

Volunteer drivers will attend one hour of classroom instruction and one hour of driving a van.

“This is a very rewarding assignment with food distributors delighted to receive the surplus food,” said Margaret Burton, Senior Gleaners board president.
