Three players from Granite Hills High School joined baseÂball head coach James Davis on the field at the 2018 San Diego Section All-Star Game at Petco Park: Sean McGrew, Jake Fenn and Trevor Hazelhurst.
All three players continue to play the game they love at the next level.
Fenn, a 2018 GHHS graduate, completed his sophomore seaÂson at the University of Nevada- Reno this spring, making a caÂreer-high seven appearances on the pitching mound with nine strikeouts in 6.1 innings despite the season being cut short due to the COVOD-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.
He made six appearances his freshman season with the Wolf Pack, which finished 30-26 in 2019.
Fenn hit .419 with the Eagles his senior year with 11 RBI and three home runs in 23 games afÂter hitting .225 with nine RBI in 25 games as a junior.
Fenn won the Division I chamÂpionship with Granite Hills as a sophomore while hitting .280.
Nevada was off to a 2-12 start prior to the spring schedule pause.
McGrew and Hazelhurst joined 2017 Eagles grad Darien Cossio as members of this spring’s Grossmont College team.
McGrew is a 2019 Granite Hills graduate while HazelÂhurst graduated in 2018.
Cossio played on the Eagles varsity team as a junior and seÂnior, hitting .227 with eight runs scored, 13 RBI, five doubles and two home runs as a senior.
Hazelhurst competed on the Granite Hills varsity roster as a sophomore, junior and senior. He hit .260 as a junior with 17 runs scored, 15 RBI, seven doubles and five home runs. He hit .275 with 11 runs scored, 10 RBI and three home runs as a senior.
He finished with a composite .259 career hitting average with nine doubles and eight home runs.
Hazelhurst also pitched his junior and senior seasons, comÂpiling a 4-5 career record with a 5.25 earned-run average with 65 strikeouts in 77.1 innings.
McGrew competed on the EaÂgles varsity roster as a sophoÂmore, junior and senior. He hit .362 with 12 runs scored, eight RBI, six doubles and one home run as a junior.
McGrew and Hazelhurst both earned recognition on the All-San Diego Section team in 2018.
Hazelhurst rapped out one hit and stole one base at the 2018 CIF All-Star Game while crushÂing three home runs in the preÂgame home run derby.
Hazelhurst initially commitÂted to the University of Nevada but announced in January of this year that he has made a verbal commitment to play at San DiÂego State University.
Cossio and McGrew counted themselves among this season’s team leaders at Grossmont ColÂlege.
Cossio, who is slated to attend Point Loma Nazarene College next year, topped the Griffins with a .400 hitting average in 20 games while recording a team-best 21 RBI to go with 15 runs scored, seven doubles, two triples and one home run.
McGrew hit .243 in 19 games with 15 runs scored, five douÂbles, 11 RBI, three stolen bases and two home runs.
McGrew ranked fifth on the team in hitting average and tied for the team lead in home runs.
Hazelhurst compiled a .322 hitting average with 20 RBI, seven doubles and two home runs last season with the GrifÂfins to earn All-Pacific Coast Athletic Conference honorable mention recognition.
The California Community College Athletic Association Board of Directors voted to canÂcel all spring competition on March 19 due to concerns over the worsening pandemic.
Grossmont College had comÂpiled a 10-10 overall record, 3-3 in conference play, at the time of the schedule pause.
The aforementioned players join a long list of ex-Eagles playÂing at the next level.
Four Granite Hills alums are playing in Major League BaseÂball organizations: Travis TaiÂjeron (2007) with the New York Mets, Trenton Brooks (2013) with the Cleveland Indians, Jordan Verdon (2015) with the Detroit Tigers. Andrew Brown (2016) with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Players in collegiate proÂgrams include Daniel Vasquez (Cal State Northridge), Michael Cartwright (Cal State NorthÂridge), Dillan Shrum (Nevada Reno), T.K. Parker (Long Beach State), Trevor Omahen (High Point University), Josh Verdon (Chico State) and Sean Ross (InÂdiana State).
Shrum, a senior, appeared in all 14 games for Nevada this spring at first base and desigÂnated hitter. He led the Wolf Pack with 13 hits, seven RBI, four doubles, four home runs and seven walks.
He ranked as one of the MounÂtain West Conference’s top powÂer hitters in 2019 with 10 home runs.
Brad Harris appeared in seven games for Grossmont College during the 2018-19 season while Mike King, a 2017 GHHS grad, continued his career at San DiÂego City College.
