To warm the holidays for needy East County families, the members of Junior Girl Scout Troop 6279 made 200 hot cocoa mixes for the Alpine Food Bank.  On Wednesday, Dec. 12th, Diana Tompkins’ Alpine Elementary classroom was transformed into a magical workshop with an assembly line of hot cocoa, chocolate chips and marshmallows.  In one hour, the twelve members of the troop, with two girls working per station, layered the ingredients provided by their parents and donations from Alpine Albertsons.  Once filled, each cone of hot cocoa mix was decorated with a holiday label and festive red ribbon.

Earlier in November, the Troop ran a food drive at Alpine Albertsons to benefit the Alpine food bank and also worked at the food bank creating 200 packages from bulk rice and pasta.  Those activities, along with making and donating holiday treats, are part of the troop’s “Feed Alpine” project to earn their Girl Scout Bronze Award, the highest award a Junior Girl Scout can achieve.  Earning the Bronze Award helps Girl Scouts learn to plan, implement and complete a project to benefit their community while developing more confidence, meeting new people and learning to work together to make a difference.

According to Alpine Food Bank Coordinator, Joe Chaffe, the food bank assists 165-200 families each week. The food bank, located at Bethel Christian Assembly, 1929 Arnold Way, is always grateful for both food and financial donations. They can be contacted at (619) 445-5508.
