Plenty of buzz at library open house

Four-year-old Annie Jaimes scampered through the lifesize Candyland game set up in the Alpine Library for their annual holiday open house event.

It was open house at the Alpine library on Dec. 3 with plenty of candy, hot cocoa and a special viewing of the movie “Frozen” for the youngest attendees.

Sponsored by the Alpine Library Friends Association, the Wonderland of Winter Delights event also featured a lifesize game of Candyland in the children’s section. Young children jumped along a colorful foam path as they gripped goody bags filled with holiday sweets and bashed each other with toddler-sized inflatable cupcakes and lollipops.

Several children ran back and forth between the game, a nearby table laid out with pages of winter scenes and holiday settings to color along with a scattering of crayons, and the movie playing in the community resource room.

According to Angela Fornataro McMahill, they served 199 cups of hot cocoa during the movie.

“It was crazy town. We served hot cocoa with whipped cream and marshmallows on it. The kids loved it,” Fornataro McMahill said.

Librarian Jenne Bergstrom swept up crumbs left behind after the movie ended, then smiled at the youngsters gathering their empty cups and said the event was a bit messy but a great success.

After the movie, The Alpine Chorale filed in and performed their holiday concert for roughly 50 patrons. Bergstrom said it was the fourth year for the group to sing at the event.

Special mention was made of Olivia Wheeler, a member of the chorale who sang “Mary, Did You Know?” while signing the lyrics in American Sign Language.
