This past Saturday, July 6th, The Viejas Tribe of  Kumeyaay Indians hosted and treated 100’s of American service men and women and their families to an all American BBQ near the eternal flame at the Outlet Center.
A band was playing, flags were waving as the large crowd celebrated America on a sunny and pleasant day. Tommy Marquez, representing Congressman Duncan D. Hunter presented a Congressional certificate of recognition to Chairman Anthony Pico representing the tribe.  Chairman Pico addressed the crowd welcoming them to the event. Pico mentioned that American Indians percentage wise provided our armed forces with more service people than any other group. Chairman Pico served honorably as a paratrooper during the Viet Nam war and told the crowd he understood the hardships they experienced on a daily basis. Pico went on to say that in the past, there had been troubles between native Americans and the rest of the population, but that today, all Americans shared a mutual respect.
Sgt. First Class Peter Romero presented Chairman Pico with the coveted Challenge Coin expressing the Armed Forces gratitude for his service and the continued support for our military by Viejas.
Many service people and their families were overwhelmed with gratitude for the generosity shown to them by the Viejas Tribe.
