October 22, 2015- Today the Board of Advisors and County project manager Michael Long met with the Alpine Community Planning Group to discuss the construction on Alpine Boulevard. This boulevard is the main accessway in the community of Alpine. It is the business district of Alpine and allows access to most of Alpine’s subburbs.
Long returned to the ACPG to receive a final decision, on the five new proposed and improved ideas that were made according to what the citizens of Alpine desired. His new ideas included saving more trees, a better type of fencing with better durability, sidewalk improvements, make pedestrian access, and to create the boulevard as one.
The people of Alpine spoke out regarding dissatisfaction with part of the remodel and how it was going to affect Dawn August and her Coldwell Banker business. August, a business owner since 1979 was not comfortable with the idea of a fence being in front of her business incumbering the flow of clients to her office. She also suggested that the County could save money by taking the approach of her own engineer. After an hour of debating which approach the County should take, August was unable to convince the Board  and decided to ask for a vote on whether to accept the go-ahead of the project. Ending with seven vote to proceed, four that were against, and two abstaining the decision was not final.
The board needed one more yes vote to continue the project.
As the ACPG spoke among themselves Kippy Thomas asked if the project would leave any interferences to access of driveways. Long assured him that there would be no interference.  Thomas changed his vote from no to yes making eight yes vote, three against, and two abstaining.
The ACPG agreed to proceed with the project of the boulevard which is exptected to cause the loss of thirteen to fourteen parking spots, a safer sidewalk that will include a bike lane which will give a separation distance between the pedestrian and traffic, less trees being taken down, and uniting the boulevard from west to east.
The ACPG thanked Michael Long for working with them and being able to support their vision on the boulevard.
