Descanso Town Hall readies for annual wedding planning event

Descanso Town Hall was built and dedicated on Christmas Day in 1898. Descanso got its name because it means “place of rest.” People traveling from San Diego to the mountains needed places to stop, so Descanso and Alpine became social hubs where locals gathered.

Now in its third year, the Descanso Town Hall Association is holding its annual Wedding & Party Planning Potpourri event on Jan. 20, 2024, from noon to 3 p.m.

This free event is not only designed to showcase the town hall as a party destination, but also connects guests to local caterers, florists, photographers, wedding and party planners, musicians, DJs, decorators, and more.

Descanso Town Hall rental coordinator Rebecca Toth said last year’s event went well, a little smaller, but had many new people.

“We had so many different groups that provided, one, Drip Haven, that provides IV therapy for stress, has vitamins, to make you feel really good,” she said. “We are dedicating more to people who are having weddings and all different types of parties. Weddings are big at the Town Hall, and we have had many weddings booked. She is one of our more unique vendors. The big hit was TacoMan, who is coming back again this year.”

Toth said this year she is looking for additional vendors and entrepreneurs that want to showcase their wares, services, and products.

“I have quite a bit already, and some of the vendors from last year are coming back,” she said. “Again, it is going to be really good. People are happy to find these other services for their parties. It is not just weddings. It is everything. We have a woman with pinatas for birthdays and all sorts of things to plan the perfect event. I am looking forward to doing this again and hopefully we can get some newer people to show off their skills.” Toth said though the event is not that lengthy, it is plenty of time for guests to get the information they need to throw the perfect event.

“I encourage vendors to bring free samples, whether it is their sweets, or cakes, food from the caterers,” she said. “We are not as big as those wedding fairs at the convention center, but we do try to get as many kinds of vendors there to provide for people looking for services for their parties. They do not have to be looking at renting our Town Hall, but they can live in this mountain community area. Sometimes it is difficult to find caterers that come out here, or decorators. It is a one-stop-shop for everyone in this area.” Toth said they do get people from the San Diego area because they want to look at the Town Hall venue because of it is a beautiful, historical venue that they can rent for very reasonable prices.

“It is very unique and very beautiful,” she said. “This year we want to keep this going and are hoping to make this an annual event.”
