A full day course on protecting homes and community buildings is open to San Diego residents on Sept. 21 at the Fire Training Classroom in Pine Valley from 8 – 4 p.m.
This workshop is offered to San Diego residents by the Fire Safe Council of San Diego County and is free to community members.
According to Fire Safe council coordinator and community outreach specialist Britney Munoz, highlights of the workshop will include learning about structure hardening, situational and ember vulnerability awareness, evacuation procedures, and last chance survival tactics.
“The goal of this workshop is to make our communities fire safe and prepared for disaster or emergencies by providing an exchange of information through education and to foster fire prevention and safety throughout our communities while simultaneously creating a sustainable relationship with nature and the natural landscape around us,” Munoz said in an email.
The event is unique in that it focuses on creating sustainable environments through building and landscape design that is conducive to wildfire safety. This marks a contrast to training events that focus on external fire factors which cannot be controlled by residents.
The training will include a field trip to selected homes to perform a site assessment based on information disseminated at the training event.
Funding for the event is provided by the United States Forest Service & a National Fire Plan grant from the Cooperative Fire program of the U.S. Forest Service through the California Fire Safe Council.
