For The Alpine Sun
Last week I had the privilege of attending the Granite Hills Senior Awards night at the high school. I attend every year to photograph the recipients of the Kiwanis Alpine Challenge scholarship. As a 23 year employ in the Alpine School District, I am always inspired by the brain power that comes out of Alpine. Two of three Valedictorians this year, Anika Kenion and Kag Iglinski-Bengamin, are graduating with GPA’s over 4.8 and were products of our Alpine School system. The third Valedictorian, Sydney Limond, attended Los Coches Creek Middle School.
This year’s Kiwanis Alpine Challenge scholarships were awarded to three students during their freshman year. They signed a contract agreeing to keep their grades up, have a clean behavior record and continue on to the college of their choice directly following high school. Logan Ventimiglia, Sierra Dickman and Ashley Hendrix all fulfilled their contracts and were each awarded a $3,000.00 scholarship along with a laptop computer that they received at the start of their senior year.
The Kiwanis Alpine Challenge Scholarships started back in 2000 with the first annual Alpine Challenge Bike Ride. This ride attracts upwards of 500 riders with the proceeds being split between Rady Children’s Hospital and the Kiwanis Alpine Challenge Scholarship Fund. Each year two freshmen students and an alternate are chosen and mentored by a Kiwanian through their four years of high school. When they successfully complete their contract, they are awarded with a laptop computer and a $3,000.00 college scholarship.
Congratulations to the more than 30 Alpine students that are graduating from Granite Hills High School with Honors this year. Your accomplishments are truly amazing and the entire community of Alpine salutes you! Congratulations!
