Lilacs for Alpine

By Courtney Norton

It is now official: Alpine citizens voted for the California Lilac to be its Town Flower. Over 400 Alpiners selected the winner from 10 different plants that could have represented our community: Monkey Flower, White Sage, Arroyo Lupine, CA Sunflower, Matilija Poppy, Cleveland Sage, CA Poppy, Blue-eyed Grass, CA Buckwheat and the winning CA Lilac.

Alpine Honorary Mayor Luis Gomez made the announcement at Preserve Alpine’s Heritage’s (PAH) October 14th event held at Alpine Garden & Gifts. Plants were available for purchase to initiate the town’s effort to begin planting and seeds were given to attendees.

Way to Go, Alpine! Now let’s get started planting lilacs all over our town beginning with some in your very own gardens. Soon people coming from far and near will be able to identify Alpine with its fragrant and beautiful Town Flower!

Visit www.PreserveAlpinesHeritage. org to help you determine which of the many varieties of CA lilac suits your soil needs and to get a growing list of nurseries that may carry the plants along with the other nine nominees. (In no way is this a complete list of vendors; simply a shortcut to finding the nurseries that carry the products.)
