The wild life

Garden and wildlife enthusiasts interested in having their property designated as a Wildlife Habitat are encouraged to apply for certification with National Wildlife Federation.

Four elements are needed to have a garden certified as a wildlife habitat: food, water, a place to raise young, and shelter. Participants are encouraged to plant milkweed, the Asclepius fasicularus variety, to attract Monarch butterflies.

To certify gardens visit www.NWF.org and fill out an application. A $20 fee is required.

Alpine was designated the First Certified Community Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation in 1999. There are 248 certified gardens in Alpine.
