In the August issue of the Kiwanis magazine, our Alpine Kiwinis were featured in the story, ‘A Kiwnis kind of town: Alpine CA, a Small California Community with a Big Kiwanis Heart’. In the story, the Alpine Kiwanis are declared a ‘force of nature unto themselves’.
This moniker is completely deserved. The Kiwanis Club of Alpine has supported so many things in Alpine, and they touch so many lives in Alpine. There are 128 service-minded volunteers who work hard for this community. As it says, ‘every man, woman, and child’, benefits from the hard work that the Kiwanis put forth.
The Alpine Kiwanis Club is the third largest club in the District, that includes California, Nevada and Hawaii, and have established a reputation of excellence. This club has worked hard to raise funds to donate to the Rady Children’s Hospital since 1986, under the direction of Curly Collier who was lost this past year. However the efforts will continue in his honor.
This is not the only distinction that our town’s club has obtained. They were named “Organization of the Year” at the 2010 Alpine Leadership and Public Service Awards for the third year running. They also received the 2011 Alpine Sun Newsmaker Award for the second year running for the Kiwanis of Alpine Veterans Wall of Honor! Our 2008-09 President, Dan Foster, received the Special Recognition Award. At the 2009, 2011 and 2012 District Conventions, we received an award for the Best Website in the Cal-Nev-Ha District. At the 2010 and 2012 District Conventions we received an award for the Best Newsletter in the Cal-Nev-Ha District.
They are known for their never ending dedication for service in Alpine. They have their meetings every Saturday morning at 7:00 at the Alpine Elementary School. They also sponsor several events during the year that includes: The Blood Drives, The Chili Cook-off, The Miracle Mile of Quarters Golf Tournament, the Red White & Blue Veteran’s Ball, The Alpine Challenge, The Miracle Mile of Quarters Art Competition, and Vintage Alpine.
The Veteran’s Wall of Honor is another huge accomplishment of the Kiwanis. This vision began with Dan Foster, and was supported by the Kiwanis. It is known as a Mission Honored, and a Dream Achieved. This monument is dedicated to all who have ‘put on a uniform to serve this country’ . It will hold 952 granite tiles engraved in the memory of a veteran. Currently there are over 400 names that have been affixed to the wall. The Kiwanis continue to make a difference every day in our town, and by all rights, Alpine is a Kiwanis kind of Town.
